5 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Flooding During Gold Coast Storms

Gold Coast storms can deliver a lot of water in a short time. These five practical steps will help your home's drainage cope and reduce the risk of flooding.

Gold Coast storms can deliver a lot of water in a short time, and a home's drainage system is what stands between that water and your foundations. Preparing before the storm season — rather than after the first heavy rain — is the most effective way to reduce the risk of flooding. Here are five practical steps.

    1. Clear gutters and downpipes before the storm season

Blocked gutters cause water to overflow the edges and run down the walls, pooling at the base of the house. On the Gold Coast, where trees shed leaves year-round, gutters can fill quickly. Clear them before the storm season, and again if you have overhanging trees. See our guide on clearing downpipes and gutters

    2. Check that stormwater drains are clear

Stormwater drains carry rainwater away from your home to the street or a designated outlet. If they're blocked with leaves, dirt or debris, water backs up and pools around the house. Check the grates and outlets at ground level and clear any obvious debris. If stormwater drains overflow during ordinary rainfall, a plumber can inspect the system for blockages or inadequate pipework.

    3. Inspect and maintain roof plumbing

Roof plumbing — gutters, downpipes, flashings and roof penetrations — is what captures rainwater and directs it away from the house. Damaged or poorly installed roof plumbing can allow water to enter the roof space, causing ceiling leaks and internal damage. Before the storm season, check for loose or damaged gutters, missing flashing, and downpipes that don't connect properly to the stormwater system. Our roofing and drainage services cover this work.

    4. Ensure the ground slopes away from the house

Surface water follows the ground's slope. If the ground around your home slopes towards the foundations, surface water pools against the slab. Ensure the ground falls away from the house for at least the first metre. This is a landscaping issue rather than a plumbing one, but it's one of the most effective ways to prevent water ingress during storms.

    5. Prepare before severe weather arrives

    Before a forecast storm:

    • Clear gutters and downpipes of any recent leaf fall
    • Check stormwater grates and outlets are clear
    • Secure loose items in the yard that could block drains
    • Check that downpipes are connected and not discharging against the house
    • Know where your main water shut-off valve is in case of a burst pipe

Preparing before severe weather is far easier than dealing with the aftermath of flooding. See our guide on what causes outdoor flooding

    When to call a plumber

If your home floods during ordinary rainfall, water pools against the foundations, or you notice water ingress after storms, it's worth having the drainage and roof plumbing assessed. Blocked stormwater drains, inadequate pipework, and damaged roof plumbing can all be identified and addressed before the next storm.
