Preparing before the storm season — rather than after the first heavy rain — is the most effective way to reduce the risk of flooding. Here are five practical steps.
1. Clear gutters and downpipes before the storm season
Blocked gutters cause water to overflow the edges and run down the walls, pooling at the base of the house. On the Gold Coast, where trees shed leaves year-round, gutters can fill quickly. 2. Check that stormwater drains are clear
Stormwater drains carry rainwater away from your home to the street or a designated outlet. If they're blocked with leaves, dirt or debris, water backs up and pools around the house. Check the grates and outlets at ground level and clear any obvious debris. If stormwater drains overflow during ordinary rainfall, a plumber can inspect the system for blockages or inadequate pipework.
3. Inspect and maintain roof plumbing
Roof plumbing — gutters, downpipes, flashings and roof penetrations — is what captures rainwater and directs it away from the house. 5. Prepare before severe weather arrives
Before a forecast storm:
- Clear gutters and downpipes of any recent leaf fall
- Check stormwater grates and outlets are clear
- Secure loose items in the yard that could block drains
- Check that downpipes are connected and not discharging against the house
- Know where your main water shut-off valve is in case of a burst pipe
