How to Fix a Leaking Shower Mixer

A dripping shower mixer wastes water and can damage the wall behind. Here's what usually causes it, what you can check, and when the cartridge or mixer needs professional attention.

A leaking shower mixer is a common problem — and one that's easy to ignore because the drip runs down the drain. But a leaking mixer wastes water continuously and, over time, can allow water behind the wall where it causes damage. Here's what usually causes a leaking shower mixer, what you can check, and when it needs professional attention.

Common causes of a leaking shower mixer

    A worn mixer cartridge

The cartridge is the internal component that controls the flow and temperature of the water. Over time, the internal seals and ceramics wear, allowing water to pass even when the mixer is off. A worn cartridge is the most common cause of a dripping shower mixer, and replacing the cartridge usually fixes it.

    Worn O-rings

O-rings seal the cartridge and other components within the mixer body. If an O-ring perishes or is damaged, water can leak from around the mixer handle or the mixer body. O-ring replacement is a simpler fix than a full cartridge replacement.

    Debris in the cartridge

Sediment or debris that enters the cartridge can prevent the internal ceramics from sealing properly, causing a drip. Sometimes flushing the system or cleaning the cartridge resolves this, but if the ceramics are damaged, the cartridge needs replacing.

    A cracked mixer body

Less commonly, the mixer body itself can crack, allowing water to leak. This usually requires replacing the entire mixer rather than just the cartridge.

    What you can check

    • Where is the leak? If water drips from the showerhead when the mixer is off, the cartridge is likely worn. If water leaks from around the handle or the mixer body, an O-ring may have failed.
    • Is the mixer stiff or hard to turn? This can indicate a failing cartridge or debris inside.
    • Does the leak stop when you turn the isolation valves off? If so, the problem is within the mixer itself, not the pipework.

    Replacing a mixer cartridge

Replacing a cartridge involves isolating the water, removing the mixer handle, withdrawing the old cartridge, and fitting the new one. It requires the correct replacement cartridge for the specific mixer model — cartridges are not universal. If you know the brand and model, a plumber can source the correct cartridge.

While a confident DIYer can replace some cartridges, many modern mixers have concealed fixings, specialized tools, or require the mixer to be removed from the wall. If you're not confident, it's a job best left to a plumber.

    When to call a plumber

    Call a plumber if:

    • You can't identify the mixer brand or source the correct cartridge
    • The mixer is concealed in the wall and you can't access the cartridge
    • The mixer body is cracked and the whole unit needs replacing
    • Water is leaking behind the wall (a sign of a failed seal or cracked body)
    • You're not confident isolating the water or disassembling the mixer

A leaking shower mixer that's left can allow water behind the wall, causing damage that's far more expensive to repair than the mixer itself. If your shower mixer is leaking on the Gold Coast, contact our team for diagnosis and repair through our general plumbing services

    Frequently Asked Questions

The most common cause is a worn mixer cartridge — the internal seals and ceramics wear over time, allowing water to pass even when the mixer is off. Worn O-rings and debris in the cartridge are other common causes.
